Start with the 46 basic characters

The quiz opens with basic hiragana selected. Begin with the five vowels: あ (a), い (i), う (u), え (e), お (o). Choose a 10-question round for a quick check, 20 questions for more practice, or keep going with an endless round.

Turn recognition into recall

Multiple choice helps you recognize unfamiliar shapes. When you can identify them comfortably, switch to typing and enter the reading from memory. Similar characters such as ぬ and め, or れ and わ deserve extra attention: compare their shapes in the chart before trying again.

Practice at your own pace

Read the answer feedback and use the audio button to hear the sound. Keep automatic advancement off when you want time to think, or turn it on for a faster round. At the end, review your missed items before adding voiced sounds or small-kana combinations.

Good to know

Is the hiragana quiz free?

Yes. Basic kana quizzes, typing practice, charts and memory pictures are free to use without signing in. An account lets you save supported study preferences and vocabulary progress across devices.

Should I learn hiragana before kanji?

Knowing kana makes Japanese readings easier to follow. Hiragana appears in native Japanese words, grammatical endings and particles. It is also used above kanji as furigana to show a word’s reading. Start with a few rows, then practice simple words while you build your knowledge of kanji.
