Katakana · Reading recall
Katakana typing practice that builds recall.
See a katakana character and type its reading in romaji. With no answer choices to rely on, you can check which sounds you remember on your own.
Free kana learning and practice · No account neededUse your regular keyboard
Enter Latin letters for the kana sound, such as カ → ka or シ → shi. This exercise tests reading recall; you do not need a Japanese keyboard or input method. The quiz opens with only katakana and basic characters selected.
Check the sound, then try again
Submit your reading to see the correct answer. Listen to the Japanese pronunciation and compare it with what you typed. If you miss a character, study its shape rather than rushing ahead; the end-of-round review lets you retry your misses.
Add sounds when the basics feel familiar
Start with short rounds of the 46 basic kana. Then select voiced sounds, such as ga and pa, and combinations, such as kya and shu. Keep the chart nearby when learning a new group and gradually practice without looking at it.
Good to know
Do I type Japanese characters or romaji?
Type the romaji reading of the displayed katakana, using ordinary Latin letters. For example, enter shi for シ. This is reading practice rather than Japanese IME typing practice.
Can I switch back to multiple choice?
Yes. On the practice setup page, choose Multiple choice instead of Type the answer. You can also adjust the scripts, sound groups, round length and automatic advancement.
